Cookies

A notice with nothing to consent to: this site's own code stores nothing in your browser, and no analytics or advertising product watches you. Three third parties reach your browser, all named below: the map on the contact page and on every role's page, the check that keeps automated submissions out of our forms, and the video player on an event page, which loads only when you press "Watch the talk".

The short version

This site does not track you. It sets no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies and no third-party tracking cookies, and it does not build a profile of you or share your browsing with anyone.

Because of that, there is no cookie banner: we are not asking your permission to do something we are not doing.

Three exceptions, stated here rather than in the small print. The contact page shows a map of our office, and every role's page a map of the general area where the role is based; each map is loaded from Google Maps as soon as its page opens, so opening either page connects your browser to Google. And the check that keeps automated submissions out of our forms is loaded from Cloudflare: on the contact page and on the page of a role open for applications, as soon as the page opens; on other pages, only when you first click or type in a sign-up form or the "Was this useful?" row at the end of an article, study or case study, or move into one of them with the Tab key, or when you open one of the two forms for journalists on the Media page. Loading it connects your browser to Cloudflare. Last, an event page whose recording is on YouTube or Vimeo loads that platform's video player only when you press "Watch the talk", never before; pressing it connects your browser to that platform. "The maps on the contact page and the role pages" and "Where that promise stops" below say what each means.

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so that the site can recognize your browser on the next page. Some other technologies — local storage, session storage — do the same job by different means. This notice covers all of them, because the law does, and calls them all "cookies" for readability.

What this site stores

Nothing. This site's own code sets no cookie and writes nothing else into your browser — no local storage, no session storage, no database. Each of the five occasions where a website normally stores something was checked separately:

  1. A first page view, in a fresh browser profile, with no interaction: our own code stores nothing.
  2. Choosing a language (English ↔ Romanian): nothing is stored. Your choice travels in the address of the page and is not remembered, so if you come back later the site opens in English again.
  3. Loading a page that contains a form, before the form is used: our own code stores nothing.
  4. Submitting the contact form, the apply form or a newsletter sign-up: our own code stores nothing, and nothing is left under our own address afterwards.
  5. The hosting platform: our server sends you the pages of this site with no cookie attached.

Where that promise stops. A few parts of the site are run for us by outside providers, and your browser speaks to them directly: the check that keeps automated submissions out of our forms, the storage a CV is uploaded to when you apply, and the service that delivers the images on our pages. Anything they store is stored under their own addresses rather than ours, and your browser lists it separately from this site. The check is Cloudflare Turnstile. On the contact page and on the page of a role open for applications, it loads as soon as the page opens; on every other page, it loads only when you first click or type in a sign-up form or the "Was this useful?" row at the end of an article, study or case study, or move into one of them with the Tab key, or when you open one of the two forms for journalists on the Media page, so there a reader who does none of these never contacts it. In one test of this site, in which the check loaded but did not pass, it set no cookie and stored one item, cf.turnstile.u, in your browser's local storage under Cloudflare's own address, challenges.cloudflare.com. We have not yet measured what it stores once a check has passed, or what the other two store, and this page will say so, item by item, once we have. One more third party reaches your browser, and only if you ask for it: the video player on an event page. Where an event's recording is on YouTube or Vimeo, nothing from either platform loads until you press "Watch the talk". When you press it, the platform's own player loads: YouTube's privacy-enhanced player, from youtube-nocookie.com, or Vimeo's player with do-not-track switched on. From then on, that player may store items in your browser under the platform's own address, and the platform's own privacy policy applies: Google's privacy policy for YouTube, Vimeo's privacy policy for Vimeo. We have not measured what either player stores. A recording kept anywhere else is a plain link, and nothing from its host loads on our page.

The maps on the contact page and the role pages

The contact page shows a map of our office, and every role's page shows a map of the general area where the role is based. Each map is loaded from Google Maps the moment its page opens rather than when you ask for it. Loading it connects your browser to Google, and Google may store a cookie or similar data in your browser under its own addresses rather than ours. Nothing we store is involved, we read nothing it leaves behind, and no other page on this site loads a map.

If you would rather not make that connection, do not open the contact page or a role's page, or block it in your browser: the address, the phone number and the email on the contact page, and a role's location on its page, are plain text and show without the map.

What we never do

  • We do not use Google Analytics or any other analytics product.
  • We do not use advertising or remarketing tags.
  • We do not embed social media trackers or "like" buttons that report your visit.
  • We do not sell or share browsing data, and we do not transmit it to anyone else.

Controlling cookies yourself

You can delete cookies and block them in your browser's settings, and every major browser lets you do it.

Changes

If we add anything that stores information on your device, we will update this page before it goes live, and if it is not strictly necessary we will ask for your consent first.
